Another kind of Oscar race

Each year at this time, I scramble to view as many Oscar contenders as I can before the award ceremony is held. Nominees will be announced on Feb. 2, so nothing is official as yet, but the industry is still buzzing with speculation. In the past, I covered computer graphics and visual effects technology as an editor. Today, I enjoy the benefit of seeing my previous and present roles converge: a majority of today's eye-catching, awe-inspiring films have a military, aerospace, and electronics vein.
