Northrop Grumman orders GE Fanuc SIGINT CPU board for embedded systems

Signals intelligence (SIGINT) systems designers at the Northrop Grumman Corp. Information Systems sector in Reston, Va., needed computer boards for SIGINT and intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance (ISR) signal processing. They found their CPU board solution at GE Fanuc Intelligence Platforms in Charlottesville, Va.

GE Fanuc won a $1.7 million order from Northrop Grumman for systems with GE Fanuc’s CL11 single-board computers and ICS-1555A high-speed A/D converter PMC card modules.

As many as 216 systems may be ordered over the next five years, with a total value of $7.5 million, GE Fanuc officials explain.


The CL11 is a 3U CompactPCI single-board computer that has an Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processor. Its power management technology eliminates the need for an onboard fan. The computer board supports as many as four PCI Express interfaces, six USB 2.0 ports, two serial ATA ports, optional CompactFlash, VGA/SDVO, and one COM port at the backplane.

The CL11 can be ordered as either a system or non-system slot single-board computer. It is suited to low-power embedded computer applications and offers an extended temperature option of –40 C to 75 degrees Celsius for applications in extreme environments.

The ICS-1555A is a 1-, 2-, and 4-channel, 200 MHz, 16-bit ADC PMC module with a Xilinx Virtex-5 SX95T user programmable FPGA, and is optionally available with four GC4016 digital down-converters.

The new solution is well suited for demanding signal processing applications, such as software-defined radio (SDR) or digital receivers.
