Smiths Aerospace to supply electrical power and control for Lockheed Martin JSF

OCTOBER 29, 1159 EST

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Lockheed Martin Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program should bring new business valued at more than $10 billion over the lifetime of the aircraft to Smiths Aerospace in Grand Rapids, Mich., Smiths officials said Oct. 26.

Smiths, which provides electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems to the Lockheed Martin program, has already secured contracts worth about $1 million per JSF aircraft, with several systems contracts still to be awarded, company officials say.

"This is clearly the biggest business opportunity ever for Smiths Aerospace," says Keith Butler-Wheelhouse, chief executive of Smiths Group.

Key JSF systems from Smiths Aerospace will include the electrical power system (teamed with Hamilton Sundstrand) and several electronic control systems including weapons control.

There are actuation packages and components included in the engine structure and other parts of the airplane, Smiths officials say. These systems will be developed and manufactured at Smiths Aerospace U.S. facilities in Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Indiana, and Washington, and in the United Kingdom at Cheltenham and Wolverhampton, England.

The JSF market consists of 3,002 aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force. Another 2,000 are to be for export, company officials say.
