Decision makers with the U.S. Air Force sought a system for training soldiers on the operation of unmanned systems. They found the optimal solution at the L-3 Communications L-3 Link Simulation and Training (L-3 Link) division in New York.
L-3 Link engineers delivered seven Predator Mission Aircrew Training System (PMATS) production units to Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs, Nev. This contract marks the first use of a high-fidelity training system for an unmanned aircraft system in the U.S. Air Force.
With the PMATS units, Predator unmanned aircraft system pilots and sensor operators can undergo immersive, mission-based simulated training exercises. PMATS devices combine L-3 Link’s simulation software with the Predator’s operational flight program software, ground control station hardware, and high-fidelity digital models of the Predator MQ-1 aircraft platform, sensors, and weapons. Its synthetic environment also simulates the time of day, winds, adverse weather, and thermal effects.
U.S. Air Force personnel use the MQ-1 to meet armed reconnaissance requirements. For more information, visit L-3 Link Simulation and Training online at www.link.com.
