Marine Corps searches for vendors to replace AAAV weapons sight

QUANTICO, Va., 28 Nov. 2005. U.S. Marine Corps leaders are searching for companies able to provide replacements for the day/night sight systems for the Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAV7A1) Up Gunned Weapons Station (UGWS) M36E3 sight.

The replacement must represent a vast improvement over the currently fielded weapons sights, by more than quadrupling the sight's range and optical capabilities.

The current system employs image intensifier technology that amplifies existing light and has a range of less then 1000 meters. Furthermore, this technology does not provide the ability to see through smoke, fog, sand or other obscurants to visible light.

The replacement AAV7A1 day night sight must provide daylight as well as nighttime sighting ability to detect targets to 4,700 meters, recognize targets to 2,500 meters, identify targets at 700 meters and be a replacement for or a modification to the M36E3.

As with the current M36E3 system a separate day optical sight will be collocated with the new thermal sight system, which will provide sighting for the MK19 and M-2 machine guns.

Officials of the Marine Corps Systems Command at Quantico Marine Base, Va., issued a sources sought notice Nov. 22, and are looking for companies to respond by 5 Dec. This notice does not guarantee a formal request for proposals, Marine Corps officials warn. The solicitation number is M6785406R6000.

The Marine Corps Systems Command's Program Manager for Assault Amphibious Vehicle Systems will host an Industry Day Conference on 9 Dec. 2005 in the executive conference room of L3 Titan Group, 10 Center St., in Stafford, Va.
