JANUARY 9, 07:29 EST

NEW YORK -- L-3 Communications acquired SY Technology Inc., which specializes in air warfare simulation; command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) architectures; and missile defense and space systems technology, L3 officials announced Jan. 7.

Sy Technology, which is based in Sherman Oaks, Calif., has military and commercial customers that include the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO), the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Space Command.

L3 bought Sy Technology for $48 million in cash and future considerations.

SY Technology has strengths in operations research and requirements analysis; missile test planning and support, simulation, training, and integration; strategic and theater missile defense target developments; interceptor design and evaluation; optical seeker technology; and military operations research and command and control architectural analysis, L3 officials say.

SY Technology "broadens our base of capabilities within the missile defense market," says Frank C. Lanza, chairman and chief executive officer of L-3 Communications. "Its missile defense and simulation and training businesses complement the operations of several of our existing divisions, including EER Systems, Coleman Research, and MPRI, and allow us to expand our offerings."

Lanza says SY Technology provides technical assistance, independent validation and verification, and on-site testing and programs support for the BMDO's National Missile Defense program.

L-3 Communications provides secure communications systems, avionics and ocean products, training products, microwave components and telemetry, instrumentation, space, and wireless products.

Its customers include the Department of Defense, selected U.S. government intelligence agencies, aerospace prime contractors and commercial telecommunications and wireless customers.
