SBS Technologies releases PowerPC conduction-cooled 6U CompactPCI CPU board

January 11, 3:09 EST
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Officials at SBS Technologies recently released the CK3, a conduction-cooled PowerPC-based CPU card for 6U CompactPCI boards targeted at the commercial-off-the-shelf military market.

?The CK3 was designed in anticipation of our customers? needs for real-time control and advanced expansion capability, deployable in an extensive breadth of rugged applications,? says Clarence Peckham, president of the Government Group at SBS Technologies. ?We continue to grow our COTS ruggedized portfolio and have delivered another first in the CPCI conduction cooled market.?

The CK3 is designed for use in a variety of computing applications requiring real-time control and low heat dissipation in extreme operational environments, such as fighter aircraft, helicopter systems, land-based vehicles, shipboard, and industrial control applications, SBS officials say.

The first military application for the CK3 is for a mission critical computer for a helicopter application, Peckham says. He declined to comment further due to contractual obligations.

The high-performance CK3 is available with either a PowerPC 755 or 7410 on a single-slot 6U board, as much as 512 megabytes of RAM, a 10/100BaseT Ethernet port, two PMC sites, two serial ports, and IDE support, SBS officials say. The CK3 accommodates most deployable environments and is offered in commercial, rugged convection-cooled, and conduction-cooled styles. The single slot installation and rugged design of the CK3 is well suited for small rack-mounted systems. Additionally, the CK3-TM transition module is available to bring rear panel I/O signals out to standard connectors, company officials say.

CK3 software support includes a VxWorks 5.4 board support package for PowerPC. LynxOS and Linux board support packages are scheduled for future release. The CK3 is currently available with a list price for the device with a 400MHz 755 processor and 128 megabytes of memory is $4,000.
