CACI to develop JWARS simulation program

March 4, 9:38 EST
ARLINGTON, Va., -- Government officials recently chose experts at CACI International to continue supporting the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) in developing, maintaining, and providing user support for the Joint Warfare System (JWARS), a modeling and simulation program for the armed forces.

The contract was awarded through the General Services Administration Federal Supply Service Information Technology Schedule for one base year and five option years. CACI's winning team includes as major subcontractors Computer Sciences Corp. in El Segundo, Calif., Lockheed Martin Information Systems in Orlando, Fla., Logicon (now part of Northrop Grumman Information Technology) in Herndon, Va., and Sonalysts in Waterford, Conn.

JWARS provides computer simulations of complex battlefield environments, including entire theaters of war and all joint and enemy forces, CACI officials say. The system is used by OSD, the armed services, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and combat commanders-in-chief worldwide. Users can simulate multiple scenarios to determine the best way to deploy forces, weapons, and supplies -- for example deciding whether a conflict should be limited to air strikes or if and when ground forces should be introduced. JWARS also supports trade-off analysis of current vs. future weapon systems with its ability to simulate weapon performance under different conditions, company officials say.

CACI engineers helped develop modeling and simulation systems for the military in the early 1960s when the company introduced SIMSCRIPT, the world's first simulation programming language, CACI officials say. The company now supports a wide range of simulation programs for both joint and individual military services. CACI's ability to reuse software that has already proven effective on related simulation systems also offers OSD savings in software development time and cost, company officials claim.

"CACI brings in-depth technical and functional understanding to the Joint Warfare System," says Ken Johnson, CACI's President of U.S. Operations. "These capabilities enable us to provide effective, timely, and low-risk
solutions for simulating military campaigns. Joint commanders can test battle plans and choose the ideal mix of forces and weapons before committing to deployment -- giving them a powerful tool for military strategy in an easy-to-use desktop environment."
