Air Force to brief industry March 26 on miniature air vehicles able to carry weapons and jammers

MARCH 21, 17:09 EST
EGLIN AFB, Fla. -- U.S. Air Force experts are sponsoring an industry briefing March 26 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., for companies to discuss their ideas on how to build miniature air-launched vehicles -- or MALVs -- fitted with electronic jammers or weapons.

The briefing revolves around the Air Launched Vehicle Investigation (ALVIN) study . The sponsor is the Precision Strike Systems Program Office of the Air Armament Center at Eglin.

The ALVIN program is to develop system solutions for the MALV Operational Requirements Document of the Air Force Air Combat Command.

The "Industry Day" briefing will be at 8 a.m. in the Enlisted Club, Building 860, near the East Gate. Company officials who want to attend must submit a consolidated list of those attending with security clearance information to Herman Gomez by fax at 850-882-8957, or by post at WMGD Security Manager, 102 West D Ave., Suite 300, Eglin Air Force Base Fla. 32542. The point of contact for the briefing is Mark Levin, whose phone number is 850-882-4808, ext. 5302.

Leaders of the Air Force's Air Armament Center at Eglin are conducting 90-day concept studies to define affordable and effective concepts concerning air-launched, subsonic, jet powered, aerial vehicles.

Company engineers must be able to produce these vehicles in families of configurations including a decoy with sufficient flight characteristics to present a fighter, attack, or bomber aircraft radar signature, a stand-in jammer, or a weapon to counter early warning, acquisition, and fire control radar systems. This vehicle may also be produced as a target or for other applications, Air Force officials say.

Study proposals are due by May 3 to Karen Schutt at AAC/WMG, 102 West D Ave., Suite 300, Eglin AFB Fla. 32542-6807. Refer to the PRDA number WMG-02-0001. No foreign participation is allowed.

Proposals should describe major subsystems such as airframe, payload, engine, flight computer, and a stand-in jammer payload, as well as subsystem maturity, expected modifications, and a plan to accomplish those modifications.

Proposals should address integration issues on aircraft such as the F-35, F-16 and F-15E jet fighters, as well as the B-52H, B-1B and B-2 bombers, with emphasis on the F-16 and B-52H. Proposals also should evaluate compatibility with the MIL-STD-1760 interface connector.
