Lean Aerospace Initiative Conference to Focus On Growth Opportunities

MARCH 22, 2002 12:30EST
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Jerry B. Khoury, managing director of California Manufacturing Technology Center (CMTC), will be co-presenting with the West Los Angeles Community College, the Riverside Community College, and Northrop Grumman, Advanced Combat Systems of El Segundo, California, at the upcoming Lean Aerospace Initiative Plenary Conference. To be held March 26 and 27 at the St. Regis Hotel in Los Angeles, this year's conference will focus on the theme, Enterprise Value: The New Horizon.

The conference is made possible through the State of California Industry Collaborative Grant, and is co-funded by the West Los Angeles Community College's Center for Applied Competitive Technology (CACT). CMTC's co-presentation will be The Migration of Lean Beyond the Shop Floor, illustrating Khoury's work with Northrop Grumman.

Participants of the conference will be able to review first-hand the culmination of an eighteen-month campaign to develop, design and publish ten training modules aimed at deploying Lean Manufacturing practices and principles beyond the shop floor.

In summarizing the project efforts with Northrop Grumman, Khoury says, "CMTC's three-year commitment with Northrop Grumman began with the objective to improve the aerospace supplier's lean initiatives. Northrop Grumman successfully instituted lean `on the shop floor,' and as a result of the need to support the migration of the lean process, the training modules were developed." Modules included: Introduction to Lean, Knowledge Management, Value Stream Mapping, 5S for the Office, Implement Six Sigma, Applying Acquisition Reform, Train-the-Trainer, 5S for the Shop, Design for Six Sigma and Process Architecture.
Assisting in the development of the training materials were CMTC lean consultants Raymond Rakshani and Colin Roach. The primary developer was Hank Rogers of Riverside Community College's CACT.

A private, nonprofit corporation, CMTC was established in 1992 to provide high-value consulting services to California's high-tech and traditional small- and medium-size manufacturers to increase their competitive advantage through improved methods of management and manufacturing.

Today, through its seven regional centers, CMTC provides consulting services in the practice areas of Strategic Business, Lean Enterprise, Information Technology, and Quality Management. CMTC's regional centers cover Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, Orange County, Ventura/Santa Barbara County, the San Fernando/San Gabriel Valley, the San Joaquin Valley and San Diego/Imperial County.
