MARLBORO, Mass. -- Raytheon's second limited production system of the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) Early Display Configuration (EDC) achieved successful initial operational capability (IOC) for the terminal radar approach control (TRACON) facility servicing Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Conn. IOC was achieved on March 26, 2002 -- seven weeks ahead of schedule.
The STARS EDC is the first step in deployment of the Full STARS system that provides new, high resolution color displays, and a new emergency back-up system that will be used in conjunction with the existing automation system. The EDC will remain in use until the full STARS system replaces the existing automation system. Bradley joins Memphis, El Paso and Syracuse International Airports where controllers are using the EDC for controlling live air traffic. Currently the FAA has approved the deployment of EDC to 13 facilities.
"This accomplishment at Bradley International Airport highlights the ongoing success of the STARS program," said Bill Voss, the director of the FAA's terminal business service. "The advantage of initially deploying EDC is that it provides a rapid and easy transition path to full STARS that recently entered operational test and evaluation."
"STARS provides a high reliability, open architecture design with significant built-in growth capability that allows for easy and rapid incorporation of new data processing enhancements and new technologies planned for the terminal area," said Bob Eckel, vice president, Raytheon air traffic management systems. "We look forward to working with our FAA partners to complete EDC installations and the roll out of the full STARS later this year."
STARS is a joint procurement for the FAA and the Department of Defense (DoD). Raytheon is under contract to develop and install up to 173 STARS systems for the FAA and 199 systems for the DoD over the next decade.
