April 26, 4:28 EST CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Officials at GE Aircraft Engines, a division of General Electric Co. are using MULTI development tools from Green Hills Software in Santa Barbara, Calif., to build the jet aircraft engines.
MULTI and its optimizing C compiler will help develop engine control software for the GE90-115B engine, which is rated to produce an unprecedented 115,000 pounds of thrust, Green Hills officials say. The GE90-115B will be used exclusively to power Boeing's long-range 777-200LR and 777-300ER twin-engine aircraft, company officials say.
"Green Hills has a long, successful history of supplying development tools to GE Aircraft Engines," says John Carbone, vice president of marketing for Green Hills Software, Inc. "Our easy-to-use MULTI IDE and high-performance PowerPC optimizing compilers have proven themselves in a number of GE engines already, making us a natural for this project."
The GE90-115B, a member of the GE90 family of engines, utilizes high-flow swept fan blades to enhance thrust and reduce fuel burn, Green Hills officials say. It also utilizes a high-efficiency, high-pressure compressor to achieve greater torque in the fan mid-shaft than any other jet engine, company officials say. The GE90-115B first underwent ground tests in November 2001, setting a new record for jet engine power at more than 120,000 pounds of thrust. Japan Airlines was the first carrier to select GE90-115B-powered 777-300ERs for its fleet, with delivery slated for 2004, Green Hills officials say.
MULTI and the PowerPC optimizing C compiler were used to develop the engine control software, which runs on a PowerPC processor in the Full-Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC). The FADEC controls the temperature, speed, airflow and fuel flow of the engine, among other things, company officials say.
MULTI, together with Green Hills' family of optimizing C, C++, EC++, and Ada95 compilers, automates all aspects of embedded software development, Green Hills officials say. Featuring a window-oriented editor, source-level debugger, graphical program builder, and run-time error checker, MULTI also includes a version control system, instruction set simulator, performance profiler, and real-time EventAnalyzer.
MULTI is available for major 32-bit and 64-bit RISC and CISC CPUs, as well as a number of popular digital signal processors. The software supports a variety of host/target connectivity options, including BDM and JTAG OCD (on-chip debugging) solutions, EST's visionICE, Agilent's Processor Probe, ARM's EmbeddedICE, and various ROM monitors.
