Navy to use AP Labs VME-based portable flight case

April 30, 3:36 EST
WASHINGTON -- Officials at the Naval Research Laboratory recently selected five custom VME-based flight case systems from AP Labs in San Diego for naval aircraft applications.

The rugged FS-4008 enclosures have already been tested in several laboratory and field environments and received "an overall positive performance review," says Greg Nichols, a program manager for Naval Research Laboratory.

The FS-4008 flight case will serve on naval aircraft primarily for radar signal processing purposes, APLabs officials say. The case is designed for running applications in remote areas and harsh environments. There is also a possibility that the Navy will procure additional units in the future, company officials say.

"The FS-4008 is a breakthrough in portable enclosure design," says Jose Valerio, a design engineer at AP Labs, "We can customize this case to fit the most specific qualifications."

The case provides the user with a rugged, portable VME system that is easy to carry, weighing approximately 30 lbs. fully loaded, APLabs officials say. The leather outer casing gives an inconspicuous appearance, enabling users to carry the system anywhere without drawing attention, company officials say. A lockable top panel allows easy access to boards and peripherals. The patented rugged one piece extruded aluminum card cage, and rigid frame structure qualifies this case to meet high shock and vibration standards creating a rugged portable solution, APLabs officials say.
