Pentagon lists top 100 defense contractors for 2001

WASHINGTON -- Lockheed Martin Corp. was the top U.S. defense contractor again last year as the company earned $14.7 billion in domestic military contracts in federal fiscal year 2001 -- down from $15.1 billion in 2000 -- Pentagon officials announced.

Pentagon leaders made the announcement as they detailed last year's top 100 defense contractors. The Boeing Co., which earned $13.3 billion in military contracts -- up from $12 billion in 2000 -- ranked second, and Newport News Shipbuilding ranked third with $5.9 billion in military contracts in 2001 -- up sharply from $800 million the year before.

Here are the top 10 U.S. defense contractors of 2001 and their earnings from military contracts:

1. Lockheed Martin Corp. ($14.7 billion)
2. The Boeing Co. ($13.3 billion)
3. Newport News Shipbuilding ($5.6 billion)
4. Raytheon Co. ($5.6 billion)
5. Northrop Grumman Corp. ($5.2 billion)
6. General Dynamics Corp. ($4.9 billion)
7. United Technologies Corp. ($3.8 billion)
8. TRW Inc. ($1.9 billion)
9. Science Applications International Corp. ($1.7 billion)
10. General Electric Co. ($1.7 billion)

Here are the other top 100 defense contractors in 2000 and their rankings by military contract earnings (the Pentagon listed no earnings amounts):
