SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- Imagery generated by DigitalGlobe's QuickBird satellite will be transformed by Boeing Autometric's high-end photogrammetric software toolkit, Softplotter, to support mapping and intelligence missions performed for the Department of Defense, it was announced recently.
Boeing Autometric, a provider of geospatial information and technology solutions, is a unit of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, a part of The Boeing Co.
The QuickBird imaging satellite was launched on Oct. 18, 2001 on a Boeing Delta II 7320-10 rocket. As the world's highest-resolution commercial imaging satellite, QuickBird is currently supporting the Department of Defense by collecting imagery with resolutions of up to 60 centimeters, reducing the DoD's dependence on classified intelligence systems.
By using commercial imaging systems, the costs associated with security, communications, and distribution of information from existing intelligence sources are greatly reduced. With the use of Boeing Autometric's Softplotter, customers will create imagery and vector maps using terrain datasets obtained by QuickBird.

"With the recent upgrades we have incorporated into Softplotter, coupled with the imagery obtained by QuickBird, the Department of Defense will be using the highest-quality maps available."
