Primagraphics Wins Radar Development Contract

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., January 10, 2003 Primagraphics has been awarded a development contract by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to provide an upgraded display console for the Air Route Surveillance Radar Model 4 (ARSR-4).

ARSR-4 is three-dimensional long-range surveillance radar, manufactured by Northrop Grumman Corporation, which is an integral part of the 44-site Joint Surveillance System providing air defense and air traffic control for the continental United States, Guam and Hawaii.

Primagraphics will be supplying PCI hardware and software from its established METRO product range to support the display of radar video, weather and target information. Enhancements of the standard system software are provided to implement specific features in the user-interface to maintain compatibility with existing displays.

The new console hardware will interface to 6 digital videos, which are prioritized and scan converted onto a PPI display. Target and weather messages are received in an ASTERIX format and converted into graphic symbols, which overlay the scan converted radar. Map data can be displayed as an underlay to the radar video, creating a true multi-layer situation display.

The development system is based on Primagraphics Advantage scan converter and Virgo PCI radar interface card. Primagraphics existing METROview application software is being enhanced to provide the new features of the user-interface.

Commenting on the contract, David Johnson, product manager at Primagraphics, said: "This is an exciting opportunity, which shows how COTS technology for radar processing and display may be used to offer cost-effective upgrades to give display improvements. This new win follows other successful contracts with the FAA for radar and video recording, and further demonstrates Primagraphics capability to offer competitive COTS solutions for ATC markets."
