Smiths Detection Wins X-Ray Screening for Japanese Customs

PARIS, August. 29, 2003. Smiths Detection has received three orders to supply Smiths Heimann CargoVision (HCV) stationary x-ray inspection systems to Japan, for customs installations in Tokyo, Hakodate and Moji. The systems will mainly be used for truck and container x-ray inspections at these three coastal ports to help customs officers in their search for contraband and weapons in the global fight against terrorism. Delivery will take place in February 2004.

The HCV stationary is available in single or dual view to optimize lateral imaging or combined lateral and top view of the scanned truck. The system is designed for ports and cross border controls dealing with heavy traffic and can inspect up to 30 trucks per hour. With X-ray energy from 6 to 9 MeV, the system is capable of penetrating from 330 to 410 mm of steel. The system includes the X-ray generator, detector and conveyor car, in addition to the image and data systems, which are customized for each customs installation.

Hans Linkenbach, President of Smiths Detection International commented, "We are proud that Japanese Customs have renewed their trust in our inspection systems, following an earlier installation in Yokohama. It demonstrates the effectiveness of our systems and an excellent level of co-operation between Smiths and the Japanese Customs authorities."
