ASE Receives $2M for Van X-ray Screening Systems

BILLERICA, Mass., October 6, 2003. American Science and Engineering, has received orders from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for four Z Backscatter Vans (ZBV). The orders are from two agencies within DHS, and include installation, operator training and a one-year warranty.

In addition, one of the systems will be equipped with AS&E's Radioactive Threat Detection (RTD) option. The total value of these orders is approximately $2 million. The Company anticipates that the orders will be shipped and the revenue recognized in the current fiscal year.

"The Z Backscatter Van is a powerful new tool in the war against terrorism," said Anthony Fabiano, President and CEO. "The ZBV incorporates AS&E's proprietary Z Backscatter technology and creates highly readable photo-like images. The system is capable of driving by cars, trucks, or containers, imaging their contents, and highlighting organic materials, including explosives and plastic weapons. With the addition of RTD, the system can simultaneously identify threats from radioactive materials hidden in cargo, such as a dirty bomb or a nuclear device. We are pleased to work with the DHS to provide this highly agile tool, ideal for port security, force protection and urban surveillance."

The ZBV is an extremely mobile, cost-effective and high-speed X-ray inspection tool built into a commercially available delivery van. With one-sided Z Backscatter imaging, security personnel can use the ZBV by simply driving it alongside suspect vehicles or objects. A flexible security tool, operators can also park the ZBV and allow subject vehicles to pass by the stationary system.
