MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. Dec.1, 2003. Link Simulation and Training, a division of L-3 Communications, has awarded a contract to Zygo and Optical Research Associates (ORA) to design, develop, and deliver a next-generation Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) for new and upgraded flight simulation systems used to train U.S. armed forces pilots.
The contract provided for the team of ZYGO and Optical Research Associates to deliver prototype helmets in 2004 using high-resolution display and imaging concepts that significantly enhance mission realism for greatly improved training and increased combat-readiness.
Unlike existing HMDs, in which the projection system is built into a projection headset that pilots must wear in place of their combat helmets, the new units will resemble lightweight goggles that can be worn with pilots' personal helmets. This provides greater comfort for the wearer, and further enhances mission realism. In addition, the ZYGO - ORA team will take advantage of state-of-the-art image generators and projection technology to present a superior visual immersion experience to the military trainee.
The team was selected by Link for its depth of expertise and history of developing and delivering advanced electro-optical systems. Development activities will take place primarily at ZYGO's Costa Mesa, California, location, and at Link's Arlington, Texas, facility, with design services provided by ORA at Pasadena, California.
"We are very pleased to be working with ORA on this sophisticated design and prototyping project, and also to have L-3 as a customer," said Robert Stoner, ZYGO's vice president of metrology and optical systems business units. "ZYGO offers a unique and very potent combination of optical, electronic, and mechanical design services in addition to precision manufacturing that should enable L-3 to set a new standard for HMD's and compact projection video."
