ALPHARETTA, GA, February 19, 2004. L-3 Communications Display Systems has been awarded a contract from The Boeing Company to provide cockpit displays for the C-17 Globemaster III airlifter. This contract is valued at over $10 million, with the first delivery slated for January 2005.
Under the terms of the contract, L-3 Display Systems will design, qualify and manufacture mission computer Display Units (DUs) that will provide data in monochrome alphanumeric text in response to inputs from the aircraft mission computer and the crew.
The DUs are 4-inch by 3-inch active matrix liquid crystal displays, featuring high-resolution, high-brightness performance and night vision goggle compatibility. The displays will be compatible with previously furnished L-3 Display Systems DUs and will be designed to support future requirements, including color, graphics and video. Each C-17 will require a total of four DUs.
"We are honored to have earned this opportunity to extend our relationship with The Boeing Company on the C-17 program," said Bob McGill, president of L-3 Display Systems. "L-3 Display Systems is a leader in providing high-performance display systems for demanding environments, and we look forward to equipping the C-17 with our most advanced display technology."
As the world's leading airlifter, the C-17 is the only aircraft capable of both strategic and tactical missions. The C-17 can carry large combat equipment and troops or humanitarian aid across international distances directly to small austere airfields anywhere in the world. Some 118 C-17s are in operation today and are being flown by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Air National Guard and the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force. Boeing is on a multi-year procurement contract to design, build and deliver 180 C-17s through at least 2008.
L-3 Display Systems, located in Alpharetta, Georgia, specializes in the design, development and manufacture of ruggedized display systems for the world's most advanced applications. The division was selected as The Boeing Company's 2002 Supplier of the Year for Aerospace Support from a field of over 11,000 suppliers and also received the distinguished Preferred Supplier Certification Award from Boeing. L-3 Display Systems offers a wide variety of displays and processors available to meet a host of system architectures for airborne, shipboard and ground-based applications.
