STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., June 15, 2004. The U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, a $74 million delivery order as part of a $315 million contract for support of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT).
This contract calls for contractor logistics support, equipment and spare parts necessary to maintain the Brigade Combat Team's operational readiness.
Stryker is the U.S. Army's highest-priority production combat vehicle program. The Stryker is the centerpiece of the Army's ongoing transformation. The eight-wheeled combat vehicle is significantly lighter and more transportable than existing tanks and armored vehicles.
Stryker fulfills an immediate requirement to equip a strategically and operationally deployable brigade capable of rapid movement anywhere in the world in a combat-ready configuration. A total of 2,131 Strykers will be fielded to six SBCTs and the training base.
There are two main Stryker variants -- the Infantry Carrier Vehicle (ICV) and the Mobile Gun System (MGS). The ICV has eight additional configurations, seven of which are in production. The MGS and NBC Reconnaissance Vehicle (NBCRV) are in development and are scheduled to begin delivery in 2005.
