NEW YORK, N.Y., July 15, 2004. L-3 Communications today announced that its Security and Detection Systems division was selected to provide Advanced Passenger Screening (APS) systems for use in Phase III of the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) Transit and Rail Inspection Pilot (TRIP).
The third phase of the pilot program - implemented to test the feasibility of on-board explosives detection screening of passengers and passenger baggage in rail applications - begins on Monday, July 19 at the New Haven, Conn., Union Station. The X-ray screening system is the second L-3 Communications product chosen for use in the TRIP pilot program, following the Multi-View Tomography (MVT) system featured in Phase I of the trial in early May.
L-3's APS, currently used by a major U.S. government agency for screening at high-risk locations throughout the world, has been modified by L-3 to incorporate advanced algorithms similar to those used by automated technology (AT) for the screening of explosives. The APS system coupled with AT technology can automatically identify and highlight potential threats, such as explosives, at rail stations, airports or other facilities that experience high passenger traffic.
"The APS system is a proven technology which can detect a full range of common security threats," said Allen Barber, general manager of L-3's Security & Detection Systems. "The APS system is ideal for meeting the unique detection requirements of the TSA for on-board rail screening where available space is very limited."
The APS system proved suitable to the TRIP program requirements for a small system that could easily fit into rail cars without extensive modifications, while also providing minimal disruption to normal rail operations and logistics for boarding passengers.
With a broad range of systems and technology, and an installed base of over 18,000 units of various models, L-3 Security and Detection Systems offers X-ray screening for numerous major security applications that include: (1) aviation systems for checked and oversized baggage, (2) cargo and air freight screening, (3) port and border inspection, (4) and facility protection.
Security and Detection Systems' customer base includes major airlines, airports, numerous domestic agencies that include the U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of State, and international authorities throughout Europe, Asia and South America.
Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications is a leading provider of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems, secure communications systems, aircraft modernization, training and government services and is a merchant supplier of a broad array of high technology products.
