FARNBOROUGH, England, July 21, 2004. L-3 Communications announced today that its Avionics Systems division (L-3 Avionics Systems) has signed an agreement to supply its Electronic Standby Instrument System (ESIS) model GH-3001 to the U.S. Army Apache Helicopter program.
The contract could result in up to $5 million in GH-3001 upgrades for the Apache Longbow Helicopter and is a follow on contract from the U.S. Army.
The AH-64D Apache fleet is currently being upgraded into a more capable IFR configuration. Along with the L-3 Avionics Systems' equipment, the fleet will also receive several Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Systems. The Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) located in Fort Eustis, Va. is performing the Apache Instrument Flight Rule (IFR) upgrades.
"This new agreement builds on the success of last years' Apache upgrade contract and allows for an indefinite number of GH-3001 systems to be ordered through 2007," said Adrienne Stevens, president of L-3 Avionics Systems. "With these avionics upgrades from L-3, the Apache remains one of the most technologically advanced rotorcraft in the world."
Designed to replace conventional electro-mechanical standby attitude, airspeed and altitude instruments, the solid-state ESIS model GH-3001 is capable of providing all three functions, plus heading, slip/skid, navigation data and vertical speed, in a single 3" flat-panel display.
The GH-3001 uses an Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD) that allows for clear off-axis viewing and anti-aliasing of graphics with clear readouts at any attitude as well as offering Night Vision System compatibility. The unit can be customized to visually match the aircraft's primary flight display system and has the ability to interface with the aircraft's navigation systems, providing more interfaces and flexibility than any other standby on the market today.
