NEW YORK, N.Y., Aug. 25, 2004. L-3 Communications announced today that its subsidiary, L-3 Communications Security and Detection Systems, Inc. has been selected by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to participate in a break-bulk air cargo screening pilot program using the company's eXaminer 3DX 6000 certified Explosives Detection Systems (EDS).
The TSA pilot program will be taking place in air carrier cargo facilities and the L-3 eXaminer will be used at Miami International Airport (MIA), Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC), Anchorage.
The objective of the pilot program is to gather data on the use of EDS to inspect break-bulk air cargo to determine if it is feasible and practicable to clear cargo that is flown on commercial aircraft using automated explosives detection technology now used for screening checked passenger baggage.
Break-bulk cargo, so named for non-palletized items that could later be consolidated on a pallet or in a container, commonly consists of light-weight manufactured components, individual packages and small parcels.
L-3 is collaborating with the TSA to implement an efficient and reliable technology screening solution at air cargo facilities participating in the pilot program.
"Commercial airlines are the lifeblood of the U.S. economy, and L-3 is committed to providing them with high-technology EDS solutions that further enhance security," said Allen Barber, senior vice president and general manager of L-3 Security and Detection Systems. "The TSA-certified eXaminer EDS currently provides airlines, airports and security personnel the most advanced and reliable baggage screening solution available, and we are eager to evaluate its effectiveness with the TSA on securing break-bulk air cargo."
The L-3 eXaminers purchased by the TSA for the pilot program have been deployed at each participating air cargo facility in a stand-alone configuration. The eXaminer 3DX 6000 is a TSA-certified, CT-based Explosives Detection System (EDS) that provides a rapid, complete 3-D image for operators to analyze alarmed bags.
With a broad range of systems and technology, and an installed base of over 18,000 units of various models, L-3 Security and Detection Systems offers X-ray screening for numerous major security applications that include: (1) aviation systems for hold baggage explosives detection, oversized baggage and checkpoint screening, (2) cargo and air freight screening, (3) port and border inspection, (4) and facility protection.
Security and Detection Systems' customer base includes major airlines, airports, numerous domestic agencies that include the U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of State, and international authorities throughout Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
