ST. LOUIS, Mo., Oct. 5, 2004. Engineered Support Systems, Inc. has been awarded an $8.3 million task order by the U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command (CECOM), Security Assistance Management Directorate (SAMD) under its Rapid Response (R2) contract to provide the Afghan Border Police (BP) with a communications system to enable it to secure that country's borders.
The contract was awarded to Engineered Support Systems' wholly-owned subsidiary Technical and Management Services Corporation (TAMSCO). This task order has a three-year period of performance commencing presently through September 2007, with an estimated ceiling value of $26.2 million, according to Gerald A. Potthoff, Vice Chairman, CEO and President of Engineered Support Systems.
The task order calls for TAMSCO to provide HF and UHF and/or VHF communications equipment to all command and patrol elements of the Afghan BP. Radio communications equipment will consist of man-pack radios, vehicular mounted radios, base station radios and handheld radios. TAMSCO will provide engineering, integration, installation, fielding, training and testing for the communications equipment provided as well as develop and provide operator and maintenance manuals.
"We appreciate the opportunity to assist the Afghan government with its communications needs in better securing its borders. Clearly, in these difficult times of global terrorism, it has become increasingly important for countries to monitor their national boundaries in order to stem the influx of undesirable characters or factions. Hopefully, the role we can play in providing modern communications equipment and support to the Afghan Border Patrol will help them in these endeavors," commented Potthoff.
TAMSCO will initially conduct a site survey to determine the specific installation components that may be unique to each base station and vehicle-type installation, as there are multiple vehicle configurations. The site surveys will also identify specific antenna configuration recommendations, identify lacking requisite support infrastructure, and support the Afghan government in remediation efforts.
TAMSCO will provide in-country repair, field maintenance, and service support, and will develop an ongoing maintenance plan. They will also provide a depot maintenance facility in Afghanistan to act as a collection point for repairables, coordinate warranty issues, conduct repairs, and handle support issues. Finally, TAMSCO field support will include both U.S. personnel and local nationals at up to three repair locations.
