Honeywell and IBM will build defense electronics together

PHOENIX, Ariz., N.Y, 22 November 2004. Honeywell and IBM announced today that they have signed a 10-year engineering and technology services agreement that covers electronics for aircraft, munitions, and space and surface vehicles.

Under the terms of the agreement, Honeywell's defense electronics business will gain access to IBM's engineering expertise, technologies, research and development, and manufacturing processes and facilities, in order to accelerate its design and production of new network-centric battlefield components and systems. In return, it provides IBM with military and aerospace resources and expertise, and access to avionics customers.

"Working with IBM will allow us to accelerate the development of new defense and space technologies," said Ed Wheeler, vice president and general manager, Honeywell's Defense and Space Electronic Systems (DSES) business. "IBM's expertise in high-bandwidth communication and protocols as well as the high-performance information processing and network management tools for use on vehicles will provide our military customers with advanced systems quickly and more cost-effectively.

"Honeywell will continue in its longstanding position as a leading source of development programs in the defense and space industry," Wheeler said. "DSES will only be boosted by our access to IBM technology through this alliance."

Pat Toole, the general manager of IBM Engineering and Technology Services, said, "Honeywell has been involved in almost every type of vehicle that flies or orbits the earth, and so teaming with the company will allow IBM to expand its services, system and software presence in commercial and military aerospace. Leveraging unique technologies, such as our Power Architecture, we will work together to create a diverse array of network-centric products."
