Lockheed Martin evaluating 360-degree surveillance camera from RemoteReality

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. - Engineers at Lockheed Martin Corp. needed a smart surveillance camera with the ability to see 360 degrees horizontally in daylight or at night. They found their solution from RemoteReality Corp. in Westborough, Mass.

“Lockheed Martin is currently evaluating our suite of OmniAlert360 and ThermalVision360 products for a number of applications calling for persistent situational awareness,” says Dr. James Ionson, chief executive officer of RemoteReality.

The OmniAlert360 and ThermalVision360 from RemoteReality are mounted to several military platforms, such as manned aircraft, armored combat land vehicles, surface warships, and unmanned aerial vehicles, company officials say.

On a manned aircraft, for example, the smart daylight and night-vision cameras are able to keep constant watch on a 360-degree perimeter around the platform and warn the pilot of any perimeter incursion from other aircraft, missile, or other weapon.

RemoteReality officials say the camera can detect perimeter incursions much faster than a human operator can by scanning the horizon visually. Other details of the relationship between Lockheed Martin and RemoteReality were not disclosed.

The sale to Lockheed Martin is the latest contract secured by RemoteReality, Ionson says, noting that the company has received some $6 million in Small Business Innovative Research grants and development contracts from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va.; the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in Arlington, Va.; the U.S. Marine Corps; and other U.S. Department of Defense organizations.

The company also has signed a letter of agreement with security-systems integrator North American Video Inc. in Brick, N.J., to codevelop products for the gaming industry in North America.
