InterSense to provide helmet-tracking device for L-3 simulation and training unit

InterSense Inc. in Bedford, Mass., won new contracts from the L-3 Communications Link Simulation and Training division in Arlington, Texas.

Selected for its ability to track continuously throughout fast motions, InterSense will deliver its hybrid IS-900 inertial-acoustic helmet tracking systems to support L-3 Link flight simulator programs, including the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard F-16 aircrew training device program and the U.S. Navy’s programs for F/A-18 C through F model trainers.

The F-16 simulator trains Air Force and Air National Guard pilots, and supports the service’s individual squadron, new student, initial, transition, and continuation training. InterSense’s IS-900 tracking system will be part of L-3 Link’s SimuSphere display, which provides front line training squadrons with 360° field-of-view visual displays.

Each U.S. Navy F/A-18 system is a high fidelity, networked trainer that enables pilots to train within a realistic simulated environment. The flexibility of the IS-900 configuration in L-3 Link’s SimuSphere flight-cockpit environment eliminates the need for an overhead acoustic referencing structure, thus allowing complete 360-degree pilot vision required by the program. This integrated solution ensures that the simulator will provide a true-to-life training session for the pilot without the artifacts of negative training.
