U.S. Navy chooses Telephonics Corp. components for helicopter multi-mode radar systems

Executives at Lockheed Martin Systems Integration in Owego, N.Y., needed a technology partner to aid in the delivery of spare radar system components for use in the U.S. Navy’s MH-60 Seahawk helicopters.

They found a partner in Telephonics Corp.’s Radar Systems Division, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Griffon Corp. located in Farmingdale, N.Y. Telephonics Corp. executives won a spares contract valued at more than $42 million for the delivery of spare components for the AN/APS-147 Multi-Mode Radar (MMR) system. The spare components will support advanced radar capabilities in the fleet deployment of the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.

The AN/APS-147 radar was designed to meet the mission needs of the Navy’s helicopter teams in the blue water and littoral sea environment in all weather conditions, day and night, and to provide superior maritime domain surveillance. Advanced features of the MMR include: small target detection, Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) imaging, and integrated Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) interrogator capability.

This contract award is a modification of a previous $318 million multi-year, full-scale production contract. To date, the total contract value for MMR production systems, spares, and services exceeds $361 million.

“Although the AN/APS-147 MMR is a highly capable and reliable radar system that will serve Naval aviation well for many years to come, with this complement of spares, the fleet will have maximum availability of the system with which to perform their most critical missions,” says Joseph J.
