Concurrent delivers RedHawk Linux for U.S. Navy Aegis weapon system

U.S. Navy officials needed a real-time operating system, as well as related software and hardware, in support of the Navy Cruiser Modernization COTS Refresh 2 program, which seeks to switch the Aegis weapon system to an open-systems architecture aboard the Navy’s Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers.

They turned to Concurrent Computer Corp., provider of time-critical Linux operating systems and integrated software and computer solutions for mission-critical applications based in Duluth, Ga. Concurrent has shipped $1 million in RedHawk Linux operating system and NightStar development tools for shipboard deployment in support of this Navy program.

As part of the Cruiser Modernization COTS Refresh 2 program, Navy personnel aim to migrate the Aegis Weapon System to an open-architecture environment. The Navy’s Aegis Weapon System is a computer-based weapon system capable of air, surface, and submarine warfare. The move to the Aegis Open Architecture (AOA) platform is expected to extend the life of the Aegis Weapon System and enable increased interoperability, cost savings, and more frequent and easier technology insertions.

RedHawk Linux, well suited to time-critical applications, delivers fast response to external events, optimized interprocess communications, and high input/output throughput. In fact, RedHawk Linux, compatible with the popular Red Hat distribution, guarantees that a user application can respond to an external event in less than 30 microseconds on a dedicated processor.
