U.S. Navy ceases funding of extended range guided munition contract

WASHINGTON, 31 March 2008. The U.S. Navy will cease funding Raytheon's efforts under the Extended Range Guided Munition (ERGM) contract. Raytheon Corp. has been issued a letter notifying the company that in accordance with the Limitation of Funds clause of contract N00024-96-C-5204 that the Government does not plan to provide any additional funding under this cost-type contract for the continued development of ERGM.

The Navy has decided to not to continue funding Raytheon's efforts under the contract but will examine, through an analysis of alternatives, a variety of technological solutions to meet Marine Corps naval surface fire support (NSFS) requirements.

Extended Range Munitions (ERM) reflects the requirement for a five-inch guided projectile to provide enhanced range and accuracy as compared to
existing conventional ammunition. ERGM is the Raytheon product that was being developed to meet the ERM requirement.

ERGM is a five-inch, rocket-assisted projectile guided by a coupled Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System delivering a unitary warhead at ranges in excess of 41 nautical miles (nm). ERM will provide a significant performance upgrade to the current fleet fire support capability with respect to range, accuracy, and lethality.
