BAE Systems to provide transparent armored gun shield for the U.S. Marine Corps

U.S. Marine Corps officers recognized a need for a vehicle-based protection and situational awareness solution, particularly in close-combat urban environments. They found the technology at BAE Systems in Santa Clara, Calif.

BAE Systems won a contract modification valued at $6 million to deliver to the U.S. Marine Corps 360 Marine Corps Transparent Armored Gun Shield (MCTAGS) turret kits for use on HMMWV vehicles and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, better-known as MRAPs.

“Our MCTAGS kits provide gunners with enhanced situational awareness while under armor protection,” says Peter Chu, chief engineer of armor kits for BAE Systems.

Work on the contract was performed at BAE Systems facilities in Louisville, Ky., Santa Clara, Calif., and York, Penn. Deliveries were completed in February.

This modification, when combined with the contract awarded in July, brings the total contract value to $23.6 million. The total number of MCTAGS turret kits BAE Systems has on contract is 1,335.

BAE Systems MCTAGS units have been fielded on a wide range of vehicles, including the M1 Abrams, Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement, M88 Family of Vehicles, Logistics Vehicle System, and the Joint Explosive Ordnance Disposal Rapid Response Vehicle.
