ITT wins $9.2 million radar approach control system contract from Turkish Navy

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., 18 Nov. 2008. ITT Corp. won a $9.2 million contract to supply a fixed-site complete radar approach control (RAPCON) system for the Turkish Navy's Cengiz Topel airbase through prime contractor Eriktronik Engineering. The contract calls for the delivery of a terminal air surveillance radar and PAR-2000 precision approach radar, as well as spare parts, training, and assistance with installation.

The Turkish Ministry of National Defence (MND) is a long-standing customer of ITT Radar Systems-GilfillanITT Radar Systems-Gilfillan (Van Nuys, California), having previously procured 13 radar systems, including 10 RAPCONs for use by the Turkish Air Force. This sale represents the first RAPCON for the Turkish Navy and will be delivered early in 2010.

ITT Electronic Systems president Chris Bernhardt says: "ITT's RAPCON system will improve operational capability and enhance the Turkish Navy mission through ground-controlled surveillance and terminal approach."

The RAPCON is a state-of-the-art air traffic control (ATC) radar used by controllers to identify, sequence, and separate approaching aircraft; provide final approach guidance, guidance through air defense corridors and zones; and coordinate identification.

The RAPCON -- available in fixed, transportable or fully mobile configurations -- is capable of identifying aircraft, using secondary radar, at up to a 250 nautical mile (NM) radius and includes primary radar surveillance at up to 60 NM. The PAR provides terminal approach azimuth and elevation control from 20 NM to touchdown.
