SYRACUSE, N.Y., 2 Dec. 2008. Engineers from Lockheed Martin Corp. Radar Systems sector in Syracuse, N.Y., and ITT Corp. Defense Electronics and Services of Morgan Hill, Calif., are joining to compete for the U.S. Navy's Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program Block 2 Upgrade (SEWIP BLK 2) -- a program that will lay the groundwork for the Navy's next-generation electronic warfare system.
BAE Systems and General Dynamics also have formed a team to compete for the SEWIP Block 2 upgrade effort.
Lockheed Martin experts last summer demonstrated the Lockheed Martin/ITT team's Integrated Common Electronics Warfare System (ICEWS) at sea. The system scales across all Navy ship classes.
SEWIP BLK 2 will integrate systems that use common, multifunctional radio frequency equipment for use on future U.S. Navy destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers, as well as for backfits on existing vessels.
"The Lockheed Martin/ ITT partnership brings more than 40 years of electronic warfare capabilities and experience together in one team," observed Carl Bannar, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin's Radar Systems business.
