Lockheed Martin upgrades long-range radars for Romania

Romanian air force officials sought to upgrade their nation’s air-surveillance radars. To do so, they partnered with engineers at Lockheed Martin Corp.’s Radar Systems segment in Syracuse, N.Y.

Lockheed Martin won a contract from the Romanian Ministry of Defense to upgrade five AN/FPS-117 long-range, air-surveillance radars for the Romanian air force. The AN/FPS-117s, originally delivered to Romania a decade ago, are to be updated with enhanced radar signal processing and data processing. The radars also gain updated platform electronics cabinets, displays, and remote maintenance centers.

Romanian air force personnel employ the AN/FPS-117 three-dimensional, solid-state L-band radars for air traffic control and strategic air surveillance applications. AN/FPS-117 systems provide surveillance on air targets at ranges up to 250 miles. For more information, visit Lockheed Martin online at www.lockheedmartin.com.
