U.S. Army chooses FLIR Systems’ thermal technology

Officials at the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command in Huntsville, Ala., required electro-optic and infrared technology for the Marine Corps Ground-Based Operational Surveillance System (G-BOSS) program. They found their solution at FLIR Systems Inc. in Wilsonville, Ore.

FLIR Systems won a $12.9 million delivery order for its Star Safire III stabilized multi-sensor systems, as well as gained an $11.2 million modification to a Performance Based Logistics (PBL) support contract from the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command. The PBL contract provides for service, upgrades, and logistics support for certain U.S. Army and USMC programs.


The Star Safire III is a commercially-developed, military-qualified airborne thermal imaging system capable of carrying up to seven payloads. It serves as the electro-optics/infrared (EO/IR) system for the U.S. Navy’s Shipboard Protection System.

This delivery order falls under a $358.4 million contract modification on an existing indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract. Star Safire III units delivered under this order will support the Marine Corps Ground-Based Operational Surveillance System (G-BOSS) program.
