Lockheed Martin looks to LynxOS for MEADS missile system

Engineers at the Lockheed Martin Corp. Maritime Systems & Sensors segment in Syracuse, N.Y., needed real-time operating system software for the radar design and development portion of the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) program. They found their solution in the LynxOS 5.0 real-time operating system (RTOS) and Luminosity 3.0 development toolkit from LynuxWorks Inc. in San Jose, Calif.

MEADS, under development by MEADS International for the United States, Germany, and Italy, will replace the Patriot and Hawk ground-to-air missile systems. MEADS protects maneuvering ground combat forces and provides homeland defense against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and aircraft.

LynxOS 5.0 enables Lockheed Martin engineers to use the LynuxWorks network stack and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) technologies, while also maintaining POSIX conformance. LynxOS 5.0 is a POSIX-conformant operating system for real-time, mission-critical systems. The software supports application programming and Linux application binary interfaces (APIs/ABIs). Luminosity 3.0 is a Java-based integrated development environment (IDE) that is based on the open-source Eclipse IDE platform. For more information, visit LynuxWorks online at www.lynuxworks.com.
