Curtiss-Wright Flight Systems supplies transducers for military helicopter avionics

Officials at Claverham Ltd., a business unit of Hamilton Sundstrand Flight Systems in Windsor Locks, Conn., sought transducers for their work on avionics in two Sikorsky military helicopters. They found their solution at the Curtiss-Wright Controls Inc. Flight Systems segment in Gastonia, N.C.

Claverham Ltd. delivers actuation systems and support for military, aerospace, and industrial applications. Executives in the company’s Claverham, England, office have contracted Curtiss-Wright Controls to provide multi-channel linear variable displacement transducers (LVDTs) for the helicopter avionics fly-by-wire systems controlling the main rotor and tail rotor on the upgraded Sikorsky UH-60M and CH-53K military helicopters.

Curtiss-Wright’s LVDTs, pressure-sealed linear displacement transducers, are embedded in the primary flight control actuators manufactured by Claverham Ltd.

The transducers provide electrical signals that are proportional to the position of the hydraulic actuator rod.

The actuators form part of the fly-by-wire control system, which changes the rotor pitch angles on the main and tail rotors in response to the pilot’s commands during flight.

Curtiss-Wright Controls is a supplier of linear displacement transducers, rotary displacement transducers, and solenoids for employment in helicopters and fixed-wing commercial and defense aircraft.
