Army asks industry for ideas on developing a vehicle-mounted sniper detection sensor system

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md., 18 Oct.2009. U.S. Army leaders are want ideas from industry for a sensor system mountable to Army tactical vehicles that can detect the presence of enemy snipers and marksmen before the enemy has a chance to shoot.

The U.S. Research, Development and Engineering Command Acquisition Center (RDECOMAC) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., is issuing a presolicitation notice (W91CRB10R0002) for this kind of a vehicle-mounted sensor suite. Few details have emerged thus far on exactly what kinds of technologies the Army wants.

Companies that have expressed interest in this program thus far include Sierra Nevada Corp. in Sparks, Nev. -- maker of the Joint Counter Radio-Controlled Improvised Explosive Device Electronic Warfare (J-CREW) system -- as well as Computer Cabling of Georgia Inc. in Smyrna, Ga.

This project will support the Army's Rapid Equipping Force (REF) at Fort Belvoir, Va., which is in place to equip commanders with commercial-off-the-shelf and government-off-the-shelf solutions to increase effectiveness, reduce risk, and speed capabilities to the warfighter.

The REF canvasses the military, industry, academia, and the science community for ideas to enhance existing and emerging technologies.
