High-temperature uninterruptible power supply battery for military use introduced by Falcon Electric

IRWINDALE, Calif., 28 Oct. 2009. Falcon Electric Inc. in Irwindale, Calif., is introducing long-life battery power for the company's SG Series TM Industrial-Grade UPS Plus line of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) devices, for rugged systems that operate in demanding environments like deserts, factory floors, or computer racks.

The batteries for the military power supply operate in temperatures hotter than 40 degrees Celsius and are rated to provide power management at least twice as long as a standard five-year/40 C rated battery for power electronics.

The batteries are optional on all Falcon UPS devices, and are rated for 10 years of expected life in a temperature-controlled environment as hot as 25 C. The SSG Series UPS carries y a 55 C (131 F) UL listing for operating at high temperatures.

"The long-life, high temp batteries, combined with SSG Series' ability to shield the battery from heat, translate to a longer period between UPS maintenance cycles," says Paul Newman, Director of manufacturing-engineering at Falcon Electric. "This will translate to significant cost savings, in terms of the time, money and manpower that is involved with something as simple as replacing a dead battery, especially in a remote location."

the SSG Series protects the internal batteries and components from the ambient heat. Available in models from 1.5 to 3 kilovolt-amperes and in 120- and 230-volt AC versions, the SSG Series can withstand temperatures as hot as 55 C for prolonged periods.

Batteries are typically the only element of an UPS that needs maintenance, other than fans that must be replaced after eight to ten years. The SSG Series UPS has a hot-swappable universal battery pack, which fits all SSG 1.5-3 kVA models
