Virtual reality computer simulation for military intelligence briefings delivered by Christie

CYPRESS, Calif., 4 Nov. 2009. Christie Digital Solutions Inc. in Cypress, Calif., has built a 48-by-22-foot HD collaborative virtual environment (CAVE) computer simulation system for the U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) in Norfolk, Va., to present joint military intelligence reports.

Christie is delivering a fiberglass CAVE virtual simulator superstructure to USJFCOM that presents delivers high-definition images on five integrated screens using 16 Christie Mirage HD6 stereoscopic DLP projectors that supply 32 million pixels of resolution. The system architect is Penn State Applied Research Laboratory (PSUARL).

"The sophisticated virtual reality environment is a marvel of visual technology that will better enable us to converge and integrate our intelligence capabilities, improve joint war engagements, and provide a measurable return on our investment," says Lt Col. William Robinson, USJFCOM's director of intelligence experimentation.

The five-sided system with 750 square feet of projection surface will demonstrate immersive technology and act as a showcase for a wide range of military applications.

The superstructure consists of two side walls measuring 10 by 10 feet, and front/back walls, and a walk-on floor each measuring 18 by 10 feet. The entrance is an 18.5-foot sliding back door. The high-resolution projectors have image warping and edge-blending software. Its fiber optic switching system uses 144-by-144 DVI inputs and outputs.
