L-3 Communications provides military vehicle power generation to U.S. Army

U.S. Army officials needed power electronics components to infuse the vehicle power system of the M-2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle with electrical power-generation capabilities. They found the necessary solution at L-3 Communications Combat Propulsion Systems in Muskegon, Mich.

L-3 Combat Propulsion Systems, as well as the L-3 Magnet Motors division in Starnberg, Germany, will integrate a permanent magnet starter generator and the associated power electronics with its 800-horsepower transmission for the Army Bradley armored personnel carriers.

The first phase for the integrated starter generator (ISG) is in progress, and L-3 engineers will provide 10 system military power generator prototypes in the next two years.

The L-3 ISG will be an integral component of the hydro-mechanical power transmission (HMPT), providing all needed electrical vehicle power, as well as the transmission disconnect clutch and auxiliary pump drive system.

The L-3 HMPT-800-EG system will provide a high-power electric generator capability for increasing mission loads and additional integration options for high-capacity auxiliary loads for the Bradley family of fighting vehicles. The Bradley G40 ISG is sized for power output of 70 to 160 kilowatts between 800 and 2800 rpm.
