EDO receives $55 million order to support ballistic missile defense system
NEW YORK, 30 Sept. 2007. EDO Corp. has been awarded a $55 million task order for evaluation and assessment support of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). The work has a specified period of performance from October 2007 through December 2011.

Army test Triton variable light transmission eyewear
CHELMSFORD, Mass., 29 Sept. 2007. Triton Systems Inc. (Triton) has received an order for 50 variable transmission (VT) goggles from the U.S. Army Infantry Combat Equipment branch at Ft Belvoir, Va. The Army will test and evaluate the goggles as part of an effort to provide better vision equipment for U.S. soldiers in the battlefield. The goggles were initially developed under grants from the Army Night Vision Laboratory and the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Emerson buys Motorola's Embedded Communications Computing business
ST. LOUIS, 28 Sept. 2007. Emerson Electric Co. in St. Louis is acquiring the Motorola Embedded Communications Computing (ECC) business in Tempe, Ariz., for $350 million in cash, and will make it part of Emerson Network Power to strengthen Emerson's position in the $6 billion merchant embedded computing industry.

American Science and Engineering gains order for security screening systems
BILLERICA, Mass., 28 Sept. 2007. American Science and Engineering (AS&E), a leader in X-ray detection technology, won a $4 million contract for multiple Z Backscatter Vans and SmartCheck Personnel Screening Systems from a new African Customer. Two of the ZBVs will be equipped with Forwardscatter capability, and all of the systems include service and maintenance training, and extended warranty.

Dawn spacecraft launches from Cape Canaveral on 3-billion mile, 8-year NASA mission
DULLES, Va., 28 Sept. 2007. Orbital Sciences Corp. announced that Dawn, its first interplanetary spacecraft, was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Lift-off of the Delta II launch vehicle occurred Sept. 27 at 7:34 a.m. and approximately one hour later, Dawn separated from the final stage of the rocket. Initial data from the spacecraft indicates it is operating as planned early in the mission.

Transbotics secures automatic guided vehicle system order in the aerospace industry
CHARLOTTE, N.C., 27 Sept. 2007. Transbotics Corp. has received an order for an Automatic Guided Vehicle System (AGVS) from a new customer in the aerospace industry. The order, totaling approximately $1,470,000, is to be installed over approximately eight months and will include multiple wire-guided vehicles, controls, hardware, and other related equipment, software, and engineering services.

AeroVironment to develop Global Observer Stratospheric unmanned aircraft system
MONROVIA, Calif., 27 Sept. 2007. AeroVironment Inc. (AV) won a contract from the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) for the development and military utility assessment of its Global Observer unmanned aircraft system (UAS). The basic contract, which will be funded under a cost-plus fixed-fee arrangement, provides for the development and delivery of the initial Global Observer aircraft, and is valued at approximately $57 million.

Polaris Defense delivers military vehicles with electronic direct fuel, other innovations
MINNEAPOLIS, 27 Sept. 2007. Polaris Industries Inc. has completed the first production of--and received orders from the U.S. Department of Defense for--its newest military vehicle, the MV800 4X4 ATV. The MV800 is Polaris' first military machine to feature the Patriot Engine with Electronic Direct Fuel Injection. The 760cc, 40hp spark ignition engine is powered by JP8, the U.S. military's standard fuel.

Universal Detection Technology gains bioterrorism detection kit orders at Gulf Coast Counterterrorism Conferenc
LOS ANGELES, 26 Sept. 2007. Universal Detection Technology, a developer and provider of early-warning monitoring technologies to protect people from bioterrorism and radiological weapons, has received more than 30 orders for its Bio-Detection Kits during the recent counterterrorism conference in Sarasota.

Rolls-Royce selected by U.S. military for advanced technology development program
INDIANAPOLIS, 26 Sept. 2007. Rolls-Royce has been selected for the HEETE (Highly Efficient Embedded Turbine Engine) advanced technology program to design next-generation propulsion systems for the U.S. Air Force. The work will be carried out by the company's LibertyWorks research unit in Indianapolis, Ind.
