ESI to acquire New Wave Research
PORTLAND, Ore., 7 July 2007. Electro Scientific Industries Inc., a provider of photonic microengineering solutions, has agreed to acquire New Wave Research Inc. (NWR), headquartered in Fremont, Calif., for $36 million net cash. NWR, a developer and manufacturer of high-end laser-based systems and components, is a market leader in sapphire wafer scribing and laser micromachining.

Report provides insight into government IT expenditures

BAE Systems completes ionospheric physics research facility

American Science and Engineering gains $2.3 million x-ray order from Middle Eastern customer
BILLERICA, Mass., 6 July 2007. American Science and Engineering Inc. (AS&E), maker of x-ray detection technology, has received a $2.3 million order from a new Middle Eastern customer for multiple Z Backscatter vans (ZBVs). The ZBVs will be used to secure and protect a high-threat facility.

BAE Systems to prepare countermeasures system for U.S. Army evaluation
NASHUA, N.H., 5 July 2007. BAE Systems has received three U.S. Army contracts totalling $27 million to prepare its Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasures (ATIRCM) system for operational test and evaluation in 2009. ATIRCM, the Army's next-generation directable infrared countermeasures system, is a multiband, laser-based system that protects aircraft against widely deployed heat-seeking missiles.

L-3 wins $600 million contract to provide logistics support to U.S. Special Operations Command
NEW YORK, 5 July 2007. L-3 Communications' Integrated Systems (L-3 IS) Group has been awarded a $600 million increase to the ceiling of its previously awarded indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contract. The amended contract, now valued at $2.1 billion, provides services and time-sensitive logistical products to the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and its major subordinate commands.

DHS selects Pixia Corp. to provide geospatial imagery for disaster preparedness and response
STERLING, Va., 5 July 2007. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has selected Pixia Corp., a provider of rapid image access technology, to provide a baseline capability for serving geospatial imagery via the Department's Integrated Common Analytical Viewer (iCAV) system. iCAV is a Web-based geospatial analytical and situational awareness system that helps the DHS mission partners to better prepare, prevent, respond, and recover from natural and man-made disasters.

U.S. Department of Defense selects Mobile Armor for data encryption software
ST. LOUIS, 4 July 2007. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the General Services Administration, and the Office of Management and Budget selected Mobile Armor, a provider of mobile data and asset protection, as a primary provider of encryption solutions for protecting desktops, laptops, smart phones, PDAs, and removable media storage devices.

Symantec provides network security for international military demonstration
CUPERTINO, Calif., 3 July 2007. Symantec Corp. secured one of the world's largest demonstrations for new military technology, the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID). Commissioned by the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, CWID is an annual global demonstration that involves more than 26 countries in testing new military capabilities. This year's demonstration took place from June 4 to 22 at multiple sites around the world.

BAE Systems wins multiyear thermal weapon sight contract
LEXINGTON, Mass., 3 July 2007. BAE Systems has won a $183 million award for production of thermal weapon sights for the U.S. Army. The award includes increasing production rates to 3,000 per month. The order is the first award under a five-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract that could reach $1 billion. The contract is managed by the Army's Program Executive Office Soldier at Fort Belvoir, Va.
