Northrop Grumman delivers SBIRS GEO-2 payload to Lockheed Martin AZUSA, Calif., 27 April 2009. Northrop Grumman Corp., the payload integrator for the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS), the nation's next-generation missile warning system, delivered the second geosynchronous orbit (GEO) payload to prime contractor Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. in Sunnyvale, Calif., for integration into the spacecraft and final system-level testing.
Electronics industry urges U.S. military to buy only U.S.- and Canadian-made printed circuit boards BANNOCKBURN, Ill., 26 April 2009. The North American circuit board and electronic circuits packaging industry is urging the U.S. military to buy printed circuit boards -- even boards considered to be non-critical technology -- only from U.S. and Canadian companies to support a robust and technically advanced domestic supply base of military board products.
Lockheed Martin F-35B exceeds STOVL thrust requirement FORT WORTH, Texas, 25 April 2009 The F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant demonstrated during testing that it produces excess vertical thrust – more than required to carry out its missions. The tests, conducted on a specially instrumented "hover pit," also validated the performance of aircraft software, controls, thermal management, STOVL-system hardware and other systems, Lcokheed Martin officials say.
Evigia to supply U.S. Department of Defense active radio frequency identification products on RFID III Contract Vehicle ANN ARBOR, Mich., 25 April 2009. Engineers at Northrop Grumman in Reston, Va., working on the U.S. Department of Defense's Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) III contract sought to partner with a provider of active RFID solutions, such as integrated sensor and application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technologies. They found such a partner in Evigia Systems Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich.
Harris Corp. wins $600 million to modernize U.S. military satellite communications terminals MELBOURNE, Fla., 24 April 2009. Harris Corp., an international communications and information technology company, won a 10-year, $600 million contract for the U.S. Army's Modernization of Enterprise Terminals (MET) program. The next-generation military satellite communications terminals developed for the MET program will serve as the worldwide backbone for high-priority military communications and missile defense systems.
Symetrics Industries delivers electronics chassis to U.S. Navy MELBOURNE, Fla., 24 April 2009. Symetrics Industries LLC won a follow-on contract award from the U.S. Navy for Technique Control Modulator (TCM) chassis assemblies. The TCM is a 7-slot VME-3U chassis with power and signal conditioning, enabling the installation of a variety of configurations of commercial and custom VME-3U circuit cards.
Raytheon wins program for detection of land mines, tunnels EL SEGUNDO, Calif., 23 April 2009. Raytheon Company won a $19 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the development and demonstration of technology to detect and locate buried land mines and tunnels. In Raytheon's plan, a laser radar vibration sensor, or ladar vibrometer, would reveal hidden targets by measuring ground-surface vibrations and use known as algorithms to interpret the information, says a representative.
Curtiss-Wright supplies transducers for UH-60M Upgrade Black Hawk, CH-53K helicopter programs PARSIPPANY, N.J., 23 April 2009. Curtiss-Wright Corp. won a contract from Claverham Limited to provide transducers for fly-by-wire systems that control the main rotor and tail rotor on the Sikorsky UH-60M Upgrade and CH-53K helicopters. The contract could exceed $20 million over a 15-year period. Shipments are expected to begin this year from the company's Motion Control facility in Christchurch, U.K.
Joint Strike Fighter Program employs ORBexpress communications middleware for security certification HERNDON, Va., 22 April 2009. For the development of highly secure communication systems, Objective Interface Systems Inc.'s (OIS's) ORBexpress is the first communications middleware ever to be evaluated under the Common Criteria security certification standard, according to a company official.
EaglePicher supplies nickel hydrogen batteries to SICRAL 1B Italian defense communication satellite JOPLIN, Mo., 22 April 2009. EaglePicher Technologies, LLC, an EaglePicher company and producer of batteries and energetic devices for the defense, space, and commercial industries, is supplying its nickel hydrogen batteries to Thales Alenia Space in support of the Italian Ministry of Defence's SICRAL 1B program. The military satellite was launched from an equatorial launch site at 154 degrees West Longitude.
