NASA retires tracking, data relay satellite
GREENBELT, Md., 15 Oct. 2009. After 26 years of performance, NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite - 1 (TDRS-1) is scheduled for decommissioning on October 28. Communications equipment that links TDRS-1 to the ground has failed and without this capability it can no longer relay science data and spacecraft telemetry to ground stations located at the White Sands Complex in Las Cruces, N.M., and on Guam, reveals a representative.

The U.S. Air Force's experimental Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL) -- a high-energy laser weapon fitted to a C-130 turboprop aircraft -- hit and damaged a moving vehicle three weeks ago in a test that demonstrated for the first time the ATL's ability to attack moving targets effectively.

Textron Defense Systems tests XM1100 Scorpion sensor, munitions platform in simulated urban environment tests
WILMINGTON, Mass., 13 Oct. 2009. Textron Defense Systems, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. company, announced that its XM1100 Scorpion networked sensor and munitions platform has completed a test series in urban environments. Testing took place at Fort Benning, Ga., where the Scorpion system performed in both day and nighttime scenarios.

New 360-degree infrared sensor flies on UAS
EAGAN, Minn., 12 Oct. 2009 Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] completed a test of a new infrared sensor turret aboard its Desert Hawk III Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), marking the first time a small UAS has flown with a 360-degree infrared sensor, company officials say.
