FAA approves 1st U.S. Ground Based Augmentation System
WASHINGTON, 28 Sept. 2009 The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the approval of Honeywell's Smartpath Precision Landing System, clearing the way for increased safety and efficiency at airports by providing precise navigation service based on the global positioning system (GPS). The first U.S.-approved system is located in Memphis, Tenn., and will become operational early next year.

Electronic warfare and electro-optical aircraft self-protection system job goes to ATK, Lockheed Martin
PATUXENT RIVER NAS, Md., 27 Sept. 2009. Two U.S. defense contractors are moving ahead with a project to develop a next-generation electronic warfare and electro-optical aircraft self-protection system for Navy and Marine Corps helicopters and other aircraft called the Joint and Allied Threat Awareness System (JATAS), which provides pilots missile warning, laser warning, and ground fire protection from other threats.

EF Johnson Technologies Inc. wins $1.1 million from U.S. Department of Defense in support of wireless, radio communications solution
IRVING, Texas, 26 Sept. 2009. EF Johnson Technologies Inc. won an order from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for $1.1 million to provide a maritime wireless solution for the customer. The company's wireless technology delivers radio communications, as well as video and data transmissions.

AAI flies Shadow at opening of U.S. Army Unmanned Aircraft System Rapid Integration and Acceptance Center
HUNT VALLEY, Md., 25 Sept. 2009. AAI Corp., an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. company, has flown its Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System in honor of the official opening of the U.S. Army Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Project Office Rapid Integration and Acceptance Center (RIAC) at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah.

Masten Space VTVL rocket uses COTS, achieves first untethered flights
MOJAVE, Calif., 24 Sept. 2009. Masten Space Systems engineers have demonstrated multiple sustained free flights of its XA-0.1B vertical take-off, vertical landing (VTVL) rocket. The longest flight spanned 93 seconds and took place between two pads 60 meters apart -- marking the first time a purely rocket-powered VTVL has flown from Mojave Air and Space Port.

Boeing completes ground tests, prepares for first GPS IIF satellite launch
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., 23 Sept. 2009. Boeing engineers completed ground tests to pave the way for next year's launch of the first Global Positioning System (GPS) IIF satellite. GPS IIF Space Vehicle 2 (SV-2), built in Boeing's El Segundo satellite factory, was tested at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida from May through August in preparation for the launch of SV-1. The SV-1 is the first of 12 GPS IIF next-generation navigation satellites.

Arrayit provides Sandia National Labs with sensitive detection devices for national security applications
SUNNYVALE, Calif., 22 Sept. 2009. Arrayit Corp., a life sciences and nanotechnology provider, has delivered its proprietary nanotechnology platform to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M. Sandia Labs, managed by the Lockheed Martin Corp., works with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Department of Homeland Security to enhance national security.

American Systems provides COTS, security engineering to SPAWAR
CHANTILLY, Va., 22 Sept. 2009. American Systems, an IT solutions provider, won an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract valued at $14.5 million to provide technical and security engineering services for the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific. American Systems will provide systems engineering, technical, managerial, and logistics support, certification, and accreditation and information assurance-related tasks in support of secure computer and network operations.

Boeing's 1st C-130 AMP Trainer for U.S. Air Force delivered
LITTLE ROCK, Ark., 21 Sept. 2009. Boeing [NYSE: BA] completed delivery of the U.S. Air Force's first avionics simulator for the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) to Little Rock Air Force Base. The Weapon System Trainer (WST) passed government acceptance testing, company officials say.

Electro-optical infrared and laser sensor system for Navy helicopters to be provided by Raytheon
McKINNEY, Texas, 20 Sept. 2009. The Raytheon Co. Space and Airborne Systems segment in McKinney, Texas, is providing the U.S. Navy with a helicopter-based electro-optical sensor suite -- with infrared capability, laser designator, illuminator laser, and visible light sensor -- under terms of a $44.3 million order awarded late Friday.
